On July 2, 1992 - 17 years ago - I began creating this Business Angel matching service. Over time many similar services have come and gone. Why am I still here you might ask? The simply reason is that I understand the importance of relationships. Using my experience in recruitment I am able to put people together according to a number of synergies. It is all very well to have the best business idea in the world, but without a certain level of experience, or very expensive advisors, your idea may not prosper.

Having said that, the best business idea carefully documented in the smartest business plan coupled with a large amount of money is no guarantee for success either. If that is what you are looking for you miss the point. Success depends on the right team of people. Success depends on how the angel investor's experience and skills nest with your own. When you tick all the compatibility boxes then the real negotiations begin.

The major sticking point for all the deals we see is about agreeing on value. We live in a society that values money highly and does not value creativity and innovation highly enough. At the same time, the innovator does not accurately value the experience and expertise of an angel investor as much as they should often.

If I had one wish for our 17th birthday it would be for more angel investors and more entrepreneurial businesses to think deeply about how they could work more closely together. In this way Australian innovation could make a great contribution to both the Australian and the global economy.
